World of Photonics Congress 2015
Program highlights in the International Year of Light
The World of Photonics Congress 2013 recorded 5,000 participants attending more than 2,500 scientific and practically-oriented lectures. 2015 sees a continuation of this upward trend: more than 2,700 lectures have been registered so far. Keynote speeches by Nobel prizewinners, the presentation of innumerable awards, eight conferences—the World of Photonics Congress is setting new records and offering unique program highlights in UNESCO's “International Year of Light”.
Nobel Prize winners and renowned scientists from around the world will be staging a get-together at this year's World of Photonics Congress. On Sunday, June 21, CLEO Europe and ECBO will be celebrating the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies with keynote lectures by the two most recent Nobel Prize winners in chemistry: Stefan W. Hell, Director at the Max-Planck-Institute for biophysical chemistry in Göttingen, will be reporting on “Far-field Optical Nanoscopy: Principles and Recent Advancements”. Next up will be Eric Betzig of the Janelia Research Campus at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute speaking about “Imaging Life at High Spatiotemporal Resolution”. Together with William Moerner, Stefan Hell and Eric Betzig were joint recipients of the Nobel Prize in chemistry, 2014, for developing high resolution fluorescence microscopy.
Opening of World of Photonics Congress and LASER World of PHOTONICS on June 22, in the ICM
The LASER World of PHOTONICS and World of Photonics Congress will open on June 22, at 09:00 in the ICM under the motto “Light Solutions for the Society Challenges of our World”. The welcoming addresses will acknowledge the political, economic and societal position and importance of optical technologies. Special guest speakers are: Dr. Flavia Schlegel (UNESCO), Lawrence Goldberg (National Science Foundation, USA), Yanne Chembo (African Physical Society), John Dudley (Chairman of the International Year of Light Steering Committee).

“High-Performance Quantum Cascade Lasers from the Mid-IR to the Far-IR and their Impact on Science and Technology

Prof. Federico Capasso is a co-inventor of the Quantum Cascade Laser and pioneered the technique known as band-structure engineering. He performed the first measurement of the repulsive Casimir force. His most recent contributions are on metasurfaces including the discovery of the generalized laws of refraction and reflection and flat lenses without spherical and chromatic aberrations.
The Conference Program of the World of Photonics Congress
The World of Photonics Congress is among the foremost meeting places for the international photonics community and is an umbrella for eight conferences as well as the practically-oriented Application Panels, held in the LASER World of PHOTONICS’ exhibition halls. The most important scientific companies from the photonics arena are behind the high-powered lecture program:
- “CLEO®/Europe-ECEQ”: The “European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and the European Quantum Electronics Conference” is the biggest conference at the World of Photonics Congress. It spans all optics and photonics research disciplines. The main focus is fundamental research. CLEO Europe is sponsored and organised by the European Physical Society (EPS), the Optical Society (OSA) and IEEE Photonics Society. The CLEO®/Europe-ECEQ is honoring the International Year of Light with plenary lectures by internationally renowned scientists and Nobel Prize winners such as Prof. Theodor Hänsch (Nobel Prize in Physics 2005), Prof. Serge Haroche (Nobel Prize in Physics 2012) and Prof. Federico Capasso, who will be opening the World of Photonics Congress with a lecture on “Quantum Cascade Lasers: High Power and Widely Tunable Light Sources from the Mid-IR to the Far IR and their Applications”.
- Over the course of four conferences, the European Optical Society (EOS) will be providing information, among other subjects, on the development, manufacturing and quality inspection of optical components, optofluidics and light technology. In addition to the established conferences “Manufacturing and Testing of Optical Components” (EOSMTOC) and “Optofluidics” (EOSOF) the two events “Optomechanical Engineering” (EOSOME) and “Light Engineering” (EOSLE) will be celebrating their premiere. Lectures by Osram, Philips or BWM on the use of LEDs and OLEDs in high-performance applications and in automotive engineering will be yielding fascinating insights here.
- “LiM—Lasers in Manufacturing”: organized by the Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Lasertechnik (WLT). Which new application areas are researchers discovering in laser material processing? The LiM conference provides answers. We are talking about laser-based 3D printing or additive manufacturing and the use of lasers in machining light-weight components. Scientists see enormous potential ,especially for components or carbon fiber reinforced plastics.
- “ECBO - European Conferences on Biomedical Optics”: The entire fascinating world of biophotonics in medicine and life sciences is the world of ECBO, sponsored by the two scientific societies The Optical Society (OSA) and The International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). ECBO is recognizing the International Year of Light with its own Hot Topic Session called “Light for Life”. Moderated by Katarina Svanberg of Lund University in Sweden, internationally renowned experts will be presenting the latest status of their research disciplines and discussing the importance or benefits of these new developments for mankind. Topics include the use of light in endoscopy, surgical oncology, tissue examination or microscopic processes.
- “European Optical Metrology”, organized by SPIE Europe: The conference deals with optical metrology and the use of photonics in image processing. In the process, the conference pays particular attention to automated visual inspection and image processing in production processes as well as in the characterization of biomaterials.
The Congress application program at the photonics forums
The World of Photonics Congress will be hosting daily practically-oriented events at the forums in exhibition halls A2, A3 and B3, which are open to every trade fair exhibitor, visitor and congress participant.
The scientifically focused World of Photonics Congress is using the practical lectures as a vehicle for integrating application-oriented lecture series into its program, thus enabling an exchange of knowledge between theory and practice, research and application. In 2013, around 1,700 participants attended the practical lectures.

- Photonics Forum “Laser and Optics“ (Hall B3.561)
- Photonics Forum “Industrial Laser Applications“ (Hall A3.533)
- Photonics Forum “Optical Metrology and Imaging“ (Hall A2.250)
As the biggest meeting place for photonics research in Europe, the World of Photonics Congress is also the perfect forum for award ceremonies. The WLT Award, the LIGHT2015 Awards, the Herbert Walther Award, the Robert E. Hopkins Award, the Dennis Gabor Award and the Chandra S. Vikram Award are among the accolades being bestowed on outstanding scientists and researchers in 2015 in recognition of their work.
