Reflectance spectroscopy using optical fiber probes is a popular approach for estimation of optical properties of turbid media. The accuracy of the estimated optical properties relies mainly on the rigor of the light propagation model and accuracy of the reflectance calibration. While Monte Carlo (MC) method has been identified as the gold standard in light propagation modeling, the reflectance calibration procedure has mainly received little to no attention. The calibration procedure is necessary because the MC simulated reflectance is normalized against the initial total weight of the photon packets, while the measured reflectance is normalized against the power of light that has propagated from source to detector in a white standard. Most commonly, the calibration factor relating the simulated and measured reflectance is obtained by dividing the measured reflectance with the corresponding accurately simulated reflectance of a turbid phantom with exactly defined optical properties. The main issue with this approach is that it significantly relies on the accuracy of the defined optical properties. These can be questionable even for standard suspensions such as polystyrene microspheres. Consequently, we propose a novel calibration procedure for optical fiber probes that is based on the modeling and measurements of reflectance distance profiles (RDP) from a calibration target such as a metallic mirror. By using metallic mirrors with known spectral reflectivity, the calibration factors can be obtained via fitting the modeled RDP to the measured RDP. We observe a remarkable agreement of our RDP model with the measurements yielding calibration factors that match within 2%.
